Without meaning any disrespect to Samuel Wainwright, I would say that to me his sounds like what we would call today an honorary doctorate one given in recognition of some achievement or contribution in spite of the recipients not actually completing the course work and other requirements generally required by the bestowing institution for him to receive what we would call an earned doctorate.
